What Benefits Can a Nominee Claim?
If an active or inactive EPFO member passes away, their registered nominee (or legal heir) is entitled to three distinct financial benefits:
- 1. PF Corpus (Form 20): The total accumulated Provident Fund balance (Employer + Employee contributions + Interest).
- 2. Monthly Pension (Form 10D): A lifelong monthly widow/widower pension, plus orphan pension for children up to 25 years of age.
- 3. EDLI Insurance (Form 5IF): A lump-sum life insurance payout ranging from ₹2.5 Lakhs to ₹7 Lakhs (only applicable if the member died while in active service).
Online Death Claim Filing Process
If the deceased member had successfully completed e-Nomination and their Aadhaar was seeded, the nominee can file the claim entirely online without visiting the employer:
- Visit the Member e-Sewa Portal.
- Do NOT log in with the UAN. Instead, click on the link "Death claim filing by beneficiary" located under the 'Important Links' section.
- Enter the deceased member's UAN, Aadhaar Number, Name, and DOB as per EPFO records.
- Enter your (the nominee's) details for authentication. You will receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Once authenticated, fill out the integrated forms (Form 20, 10D, and 5IF) presented on the screen.
- Upload the scanned copy of the Death Certificate and Aadhaar card. (A Bank Passbook/Cancelled Cheque is not required if your bank account is NPCI-verified).
- Submit using Aadhaar OTP (e-Sign).
Offline Claim Process (If e-Nomination was not done)
If e-nomination is absent, the online system cannot be used. The family must process it physically through the deceased member's last employer:
- Download physical copies of Form 20, Form 10D, and Form 5IF.
- Fill them out and attach the original Death Certificate, surviving family member certificate, and bank account proofs.
- Submit the packet to the employer. The employer will attest the forms with their official seal and signature.
- The employer or the family must then submit the physical packet to the regional EPFO field office.
Fast-Track Settlement: EPFO field offices are mandated by the Central Board of Trustees to settle death claims on a priority basis, usually within 7 days of receiving the complete documents.
